But I do think his mandarin is good, but not native sounding.

Chinese vegetarian food may look very healthy but it's actually very oily and full of MSG. They
normally fry (be it deep or shallow fry) the mock-meat before adding other ingredients. :(

PBOC: Yuan rates already market regulating

www.chinanews.cn 2005-07-31 17:06:04

(Source: China Daily)

July 31 - The People's Bank of China, the central bank, said the yuan
exchange rate is now made floating according to market forces, ruling out
any more government-decreed revaluation of its currency, also called
Renminbi.
Since its 2.1 per cent appreciation of the yuan announced on July 21,
there are growing expectations in the Western world that further
revaluations will follow, triggering increasing speculative fund inflows.
Some critics in Washington have also called for a much more substantial
rise of the Renminbi against the US dollar.
"Some foreign people have tried to create misunderstanding by saying the
adjustment is an initial move and there will be more to come," the bank
said in a statement, adding that such foreigners had come up with such
explanation "to suit their own purposes". In fact, the bank said, the
renminbi rate was being set "according to objective rules".
"These movements will be created by the floating mechanism and there will
be no more official adjustments of the renminbi level," it said.
The central bank said that in trading since revaluation, the yuan had
been reflecting market forces and movements in international currency
exchange rates.
Renminbi non-deliverable forwards, an off-shore instrument used to bet on
the Chinese currency, suggest investors expect significant further
appreciation of the renminbi over the next 12 months, the Financial Times
reported.
The newspaper quoted Professor Michael Pettis of the Guanghua School of
Management at Peking University as saying market expectations might be
difficult to change, since pressure for revaluation had largely been
driven by trade imbalances and money supply concerns.
The central bank's new regime for rates formulation - a "managed float"
based on "market supply and demand with reference to a basket of
currencies" - means that the bank's claim that yuan rates will reflect
market movements must be taken on trust, the paper said.
Some analysts say the lack of clarity, including the details of the said
basket of currencies, is intentional, aimed at giving the bank more
flexibility in setting its new renminbi policy.
Earlier last week, Li Deshui, commissioner of the National Bureau of
Statistics who also sits at the central bank's policy research and making
commission, told reporters that the capital account won't be let open to
market speculation funds, and the yuan won't become fully convertible in
at least five years.

NASA to launch shuttle Discovery July 26

www.chinanews.cn 2005-07-21 09:21:30

(Agencies)

WASHINGTON, July 21 - NASA said it had set a new tentative launch date
for the shuttle Discovery of July 26 at 10:44 am (1444 GMT) from the
Kennedy Space Center near Cape Canaveral in Florida.
The US space agency scrubbed a planned lift-off on July 13 after a glitch
occurred in one of Discovery's fuel gauge systems during launch
preparations.
"Right now we think we have eliminated all possible causes" related to
the glitch, launch program director Bill Parson told reporters in a
televised press conference.
The planned July 26 launch would be the first US shuttle launch since
Columbia tore apart in February 2003, killing all seven astronauts aboard.

Tibet to celebrate 40th anniversary of TAR establishment

www.chinanews.cn 2005-07-12 14:21:40

A continuous stream of Tibetan Buddhists were walking around the grand
Potala Palace, turning their rollers inscribed with Buddhist scriptures
along the road on which their forefathers had trodden. In recent years,
significant changes have taken place along the road. A large square has
been built at the foot of Potala Palace, and the road has become wider
and smoother. At present, many places are undergoing maintenance works to
welcome the 40th anniversary of the establishment of Tibet Autonomous
Region (TAR) with a brand-new look.

China, US discussing textile tensions

www.chinanews.cn 2005-07-08 10:33:25

(Source: China Daily)

July 8 - China and the United States are scheduled to hold a new round of
talks today as textile frictions between the two sides continue to flare
as hot as Beijing's weather, a China's Ministry of Commerce official said.
"This round, which still concentrates on the technical level, is expected
to pave the way for further talks in the Sino-US Joint Commission for
Commerce and Trade to be held next Monday in Beijing," the source said.
Some insiders are wondering whether discussions between the two
governments will be able to rescue two sides from their current imbroglio.
The China Chamber of Commerce for the Import and Export of Textiles
warned Chinese textile exporters to stop exporting cotton trousers,
shirts, and underwear to the US market because border officials may shut
down traffic within a few days.
