Ground carving of "hundreds of surnames"

www.chinanews.cn 2006-03-02 14:17:07

Citizens were looking for their own surnames on the ground carving
featuring "hundreds of surnames" in the center of the People's Square in
Guangxi's Liuzhou City on Mar. 1. The 314 Chinese family names carved on
the ground are of different sizes and mixed with one another randomly in
different Chinese calligraphic styles, such as Li (official or clerical
style, originating in between 25 and 220AD), Kai (regular style,
originating in 173AD), Xing (running style, originating in 87AD) and
Zhuan (seal style, originating in between BC221 and AD220). According to
designer Mr. Ni, the carving is made from brass, 4-odd meters in both
length and width, and weighs 10 tons. It mirrors the fascination of
Chinese characters with several hundred surnames, from which people can
find their own family names while making close contact with the ground
carving.

Paris fashion: Dior's gothic chic

www.chinanews.cn 2006-03-01 11:04:20

A model presents a creation by John Galliano for Christian Dior during
the Autumn/Winter 2006-07 ready-to-wear collections in Paris, 28 February
2006.

PARIS - A slender silhouette of straight skirts with jackets belted by
oversized square buckles set the tone for Christian Dior's ready-to-wear,
presented inside the late 19th century Grand Palais.
The 'gothic chic' of John Galliano told quite a different story at
Dior. The British designer sent out models wearing black headbands over
their long, ironed-straight hair, eyes hidden behind dark glasses, or
with a large crucifix hanging around the neck.
He used lots of bold red and black, pairing his skirts in printed suede
or black leather with knee-high boots, while also calling upon mink, goat
fur trim and beige sheepskin. And he added the occasional print of black
flowers.

The Chinese Navy organized a squad composed of frigates, mine sweepers
and submarine chasers to conduct the exercises for key items, such as
berthing vessels with and without an anchor, chasing submarines at sea
and arranging teams to navigate in narrow watercourses in a certain
region of the East China Sea, on Feb. 23. The inspecting and guiding team
consisting of four units carried out complete supervision on the
exercises, in an effort to avoid favoritism and ignorance of training and
ensure that the exercises imitate the real battle and cultivate qualified
soldiers.

HK Disneyland not adapted to China yet

www.chinanews.cn 2006-02-17 16:33:09

Chinanews, Feb. 17 - Nearly 3,000 tourists from afar with valid tickets
were refused to enter the Hong Kong Disneyland, which claimed that the
action was to avoid safety-related accidents in the overcrowded park. The
"entry rejection" incident has aroused discussions in the society.
According to a China Youth Daily report, consensus deemed that although
HK Disneyland's rejecting its visitors reflected the failed measure of
its executives, there appeared a deep-seated reason behind the incident,
that is, the "Mickey Mouse" in HK has not truly adapted itself to China
yet, and HK Disneyland has neglected the feature of the tourism and
consumption culture in mainland China.
There are three golden weeks in mainland China, which fall on the Spring
Festival, early May and early October. All are high seasons for mainland
Chinese to tour around. The Spring Festival golden week overlaps both the
annual Chinese New Year and the winter vacation for students. HK
Disneyland's key target tourists will be the freest in this period.
However, HK Disneyland happened to ignore this in its Spring Festival
organization by regarding Chinese public holidays as usual days.
Hong Kong Disneyland's unawareness of the mainland lies in other aspects.
In 2005, 12.5 million mainlanders traveled in Hong Kong, setting a record
high and accounting for over 50% of Hong Kong's 23 million visitors from
all over the world last year. On Feb. 13th, Hong Kong Tourism Board
revealed that in January, 2.2 million tourists paid a visit to Hong Kong,
rising 15% year on year and setting a high. Consensus believed that the
"entry rejection" shows that Hong Kong Disneyland's understanding and
estimation of the mainland's consumption prospect are far behind the
times.
According to experts, the "entry rejection" manifested that services of
Hong Kong Disneyland have a poor local receptivity. Its neglect of the
cultural characteristics of the mainland's consumption and its
management's deficiency in service attitude and strain capacity finally
led to the result that no one wanted to see.

A folk dragon dance team were performing dragon dance in front of a local
shop on Wuyi Mountain on the evening of Feb. 7. Before the Lantern
Festival on the 15th day in the Chinese lunar calendar, native villagers
in Fujian's Wuyi Mountain enjoy the tradition of organizing dragon dance
teams to start a "dragon dance tour" and raise funds in local shops and
households. Shop owners and housemasters should light up firecrackers to
"welcome the dragon" and send out red envelops with lucky money inside.

construction.

Lanterns were selling hot in the bazaar of Chenghuang Town in Guangxi's
Xingye County on Feb. 6, the ninth day of this Chinese New Year. Folks in
many places of Guangxi follow the custom of hanging up lanterns and
drinking wine on Jan. 10th in the lunar calendar. It is said that on that
day, any household who had a new-born boy in the previous year should
hang up lanterns in the sacrifice site for the god of the land, the
ancestral temple and the main hall of the house. Lanterns in the
sacrifice site and the main hall should be burned on Jan. 16th in the
lunar calendar, which are called "fallen lanterns".
