Double Yoga, after hot yoga, baby yoga, power yoga, kickboxing yoga and
punk rock yoga, has become the new bend trend this year. Instead of the
typical box of chocolates or bouquet of flowers, more and more couples
are choosing yoga to show their love for each other, with results lasting
longer and making relationships spicier.

According to Ganga White, inventor of Double Yoga from US, when done with
a partner you're in relationship with, double yoga can mirror the dynamic
between the two; and if one person is tuning out or being too
controlling, yoga can give you a safe place to address those issues.

The following are a few postures you can try with your sweetheart.
Remember, before you start, relax and breathe into the abdomen, and try
to communicate candidly, not only with words, but also through touch and
breath, with your partner. After every posture, spend a few minutes
contemplating the special qualities your partner brings to your life.

1. Partners child and fish pose
Partner 1 goes into the child's pose with a blanket under his or her
legs. Partner 2 slowly rolls back over Partner 1, trying to lengthen
moving with awareness, especially if Partner 2 is heavier. Once Partner 2
is all the way back, hang out for 6 or 10 breaths.

2. Partners tree pose
Stand face to face with one hand pressing close with the hand of your
partner, then both try to raise one foot and grab them with the free
hands.

3. This pose is suitable for partners of similar height.
With both hands clenched with your partner, sit tight and slowly raise
your leg and foot. Try to keep your back erect.

4. Partner mountain and handstand pose
This is a rather difficult pose. You should have practiced yoga for three
or four months to achieve this pose.

5. Partner sage twist
This pose tones and massages the abdominal area, the liver, spleen and
intestines. It can also relieve lower back pains caused by muscle tension.

Consuming passion

Consuming passion

By Beijing Weekend (Beijing Weekend)
Updated: 2007-07-16 11:09

Beijing's new fame as a shopper's paradise just stepped up a notch, with
numerous malls sprouting across the city, and yet more to come in the
run-up to the Games.

The capital's retail sector is entering a new stage of development, with
the number of malls to reach its peak by 2008, said Dennis Luk, director
of the retail department under Beijing Colliers International.

It's good news for the city's stylish lads and lasses, with several new
centers opened just in time to stock summer's hot new looks. Here's a
rundown on some of the unique characteristics being seen as the retail
big guns fight for your Mao.

SOHO Shangdu

This new complex is heaven for young girls in search of the latest
fashions. Located in the northwest corner of Chaoyang District, SOHO gets
an avant-garde facade, combining irregular and upside-down triangles
designed by acclaimed Australian Federation Square architect, Peter
Davidson. It boasts an astounding scale of one 5-storey, 37,000 square
meter vertical shopping street, one 8-storey business building and one
24-storey office tower.

The biggest feature here is the variety of small shops, covering
everything from jewelry and delicate handicrafts, to beauty salons and
chic clothes imported from Japan and South Korea. Though most are not
famous brands, all goods look quite trendy with comparatively low prices,
aiming at the fashionable young under 30 years old.

There are more than 400 small shops and boutiques in the building, though
at time of press just one-third of these were open for trading at the
brand-new center. To celebrate the opening, shops have slashed prices by
half.

Of those stores up and running, there are quite a few specializing in
artworks that are worth visiting. As-wishes on the third floor features
pottery in natural rough and simple styles. To keep the natural touch of
the products, the pottery is fired by wood instead of gas or coal.

On the second floor there are two shops focusing on handmade accessories
and artworks ?Tiantangyan features Nepalese and Tibetan jewelry,
cushions, delicate handmade clothes and scarves with strong exotic
flavor, while Shicaotang provides handmade leather products, from ordered
shoes to toys.

The complex also houses two open-air atriums, ideal for holding fashion
shows and small concerts. Another highlight, the five sunken gardens,
turns the shopping trip into a light-hearted experience.

Food here is OK. You can taste snacks from all around China, such as the
authentic Yunnan Rice Vermicelli and Shanxi Cut Noodle.

Location: 8 Dongdaqiao Lu, Chaoyang District

Wangjing Jiamao Shopping Center

This mall is more like an entertainment center, boasting a gym and beauty
clubs, various restaurants, and small indoor amusement parks for
children. Most brands there aim at middle and high-end customers, for
instance, CK, Touch and Fox. The entire fourth floor provides complete
ranges of products for kids and pregnant mothers, which has proved
popular with families.

Food is given a big presence here, with more than 50 restaurants
featuring different tastes. As Wangjing attracts many of Beijing's
Koreans, there is a special Korean cuisine zone on the second floor.

Concern for the shopper touches every corner of the mall. There is a tea
room on each floor providing free drinks for customers; in most toilets
there are special places for mothers to change baby's diaper.

One disadvantage is that the mall only has parking for 500 cars, creating
headaches on weekends.

Location: Guangshun Beidajie, Wangjing, Chaoyang District.

Landao Jinuu Department Store

It is the only large-scale shopping center on the North 5th Ring Road in
Beijing. Focusing on high-end clothes, the 15,000-square-meter mall
gathers more than 300 brands, such as Adidas, Nike and L'oreal.

Location: 1 Anningzhuang Donglu, Xisanqi, Haidian District

Who's written a new rock opera? Pete Townshend

'Quadrophenia,' Townshend has written a new rock opera that will be given
a test run at a theater festival in New York this weekend. [Reuters]

NEW YORK (Reuters) - More than 30 years after his seminal "Tommy" and
"Quadrophenia," The Who's Pete Townshend has written a new rock opera
that will be given a test run at a theater festival in New York this
weekend.

Townshend, 62, who wrote over 100 songs for the classic British rock band
The Who as well "Tommy" in 1969 and "Quadrophenia" in 1973, two pieces
that defined a generation of disaffected youth, has written the book,
lyrics and music to "The Boy Who Heard Music."

Townshend first wrote the new rock opera as an Internet novella, noting
in the foreword that he likes to sketch out his operas in this way to
settle the plots and storylines.

"The Boy" is described as "a hallucinatory tale about the rise and fall
of a band made up of three teenagers from different ethnic backgrounds as
seen through the eyes of an aging rock star."

Musicians and actors will read and sing their way through the two-hour
show on Friday night and twice on Saturday at Vassar College in
Poughkeepsie, which is staging the New York Stage and Films' 23rd
Powerhouse Theater festival for developing new work.

Ed Cheetham, producing director for the Powerhouse at Vassar, said they
had only planned to put the show on twice but the huge demand for tickets
prompted a third production.

Townshend, director Ethan Silverman and the cast were not giving any
interviews about the show, believed to include a number of songs from The
Who's 2006 album "Endless Wire," and it was uncertain if Towshend would
attend.

"It's at the very beginning of its process," said Cheetham. "But when you
hear it, you can definitely hear that it is Townshend."

Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman has such a weakness for chocolate cake she munches her way
through one every week.

The actress admits she could gobble down a huge slice of cake every
night, but has to limit her chocolate habit.

She says, "I can't have a piece of cake every night but I can have a
piece of cake three or four nights a week.

"I eat healthily, but I also love pies and chocolate."

And Kidman, 40, admits she also has a weakness for cheese: "When I see a
great piece of cheese and wonder if it's better to eat it and get
cellulite or not eat it, in the end, I'll probably nibble on the cheese."

My China debrief in 10 seconds or less

ENTERTAINMENT / Hot Pot Column

My China debrief in 10 seconds or less

By Charlie Shifflett (China Daily)
Updated: 2007-07-12 09:15

Since my friends and family can't visit China themselves, I try to bring
China to them - at least, all of the country I can cram into two
suitcases.

The usual gifts - chopsticks, Great Wall T-shirts, calligraphy, scroll
paintings, silk kites, tea sets - tend to reinforce their vision of a
land where people eat food with sticks and build magnificent walls on
mountain peaks. But I've also tried to bring them parts of New China: pop
music from Pu Shu and Jay Chou, movies from directors Jia Zhangke and
Wang Xiaoshuai - oh, and some random knick-knacks, such as coupon

booklets from McDonald's and Chinese-language newspapers.

Unfortunately, these "New China" gifts aren't usually a hit. Friends and
family seem to prefer gifts from the China of old.

Once, while screening a DVD of Wang Xiaoshuai's Beijing Bicycle for my
family, I proudly pointed out Beijing landmarks and offered (perhaps a
little too much) insight into city life. Soon, however, yawns and hunger
began to overtake the whole family. Everyone took turns going to the
refrigerator. Mom started ironing and folding clothes. Dad fell asleep.
Only my brother remained. He insisted on sitting through the whole movie,
but I knew deep down that he'd rather have been running up the score on
some hapless team in his Xbox football game.

Over time, I've learned that my friends and family prefer to see hutong -
not high-rises. They want to hear traditional folk music - not a Chinese
Usher. And when I hand over the newspapers and McDonald's coupons, well,
their puzzled look says it all.

"What am I going to do with this?"

Good question.

From what I can tell, gifts from China are meant to be shown off to
whomever comes within range of it. Get too close and a silent alarm will
sound, prompting my mom to say, "Oh, that - Charlie brought it home from
China. Isn't it beautiful?"

She could be talking about the scroll painting of the sparrow on a pear
tree branch. Or she could be talking about the jade frog sitting on her
desk at school - or about the neat mini-umbrella that opens to reveal the
logo for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. These gifts are conversation starters
- conversations that end soon after they begin.

What else is there to say? Traditional, touristy gifts likes these
confirm general information and assumptions about China. For the average
person, this is enough.

In giving gifts, I hope to buy permission to talk people's ears off about
China. Not just about the things they already know, but about the things
I want them to know. That taxi drivers are some of the coolest Chinese
people I've met. That waking up on the other side of the world can be
terribly lonely, and also unbelievably exciting.

Sometimes my friends and family are gracious enough to give me a few
minutes, but more often I'm left to answer the "So how's China?" question
in 10 seconds or less.

In such cases, I just let the scroll paintings and Great Wall T-shirts
speak for themselves.

Watson turns to Radcliffe and Grint for advice on boys

(ANI)
Updated: 2007-07-10 16:35

Actors Daniel Radcliffe (R), Rupert Grint (L), and Emma Watson pose
during a photocall
to promote the new film 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix'
at County Hall in London, June 25, 2007. [Reuters]

When it comes to getting advice on the opposite sex, British actress Emma
Watson turns to her Harry Potter co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert
Grint.

The young star, who plays the muggle-born witch Hermione Granger in the
hit movie adaptations of JK Rowling's literary series, is a
self-confessed 'mad texter'.

Watson admits that when not filming the Potter flicks, she is always
sending text messages to Radcliffe and Grint, whose advice comes
extremely handy when dealing with boys.

And, she also helps them out when they need to decipher a message sent to
them by a girl.

"I am always texting Dan and Rupert when we are not working. And we are
always swapping girl and boy advice when we're together," Contactmusic
quoted her, as saying.

"It's quite funny - I am like, 'Oh, I have got this text from a boy, what
on earth do I say? What does this translate to in boy language? I don't
understand,' and they will be like, 'Well, this means this.' I have got
my own personal on-set boy text translators," she adds.

Watson will now be seen on the big screen alongside her two co-stars when
the movie adaptation of the fifth book Harry Potter and the Order of the
Phoenix hits theatres on July 11.

Goodbye to Granny pants

By Kacey (smartshanghai.com)
Updated: 2007-07-10 09:23

Having lived and worked in New York in the film industry, Shiny Fang,
originally from Taiwan, is no stranger to lingerie. Not that women in the
New York film industry have any particular insight on lingerie, but women
in New York in general, with its popular boutiques - Victoria's Secret,
Pink Pussycats, and Bonne Nuits - know their underwear. Shiny herself
came to a point in her life (nearing the big 3-0) and wanted a change.
Along with a friend, she set up her own business choosing an unlikely
combination: Shanghai and lingerie.

Shiny thinks that underwear is still being "discovered" in China and
perceives a gap in the market. I would have to agree with her in that,
there seems to be an abundance of 'granny knickers' in Shanghai; in the
shops, on the washing lines and, most shockingly, on the people. Her
lingerie boutique was opened in January of this year, offering a
selection of non-commercial designer brands from the UK and America. By
non-commercial I mean, it's not your usual Calvin Klein, Versace or
French Connection; she sells labels such as Kenzo and Jimmy Jane, to name
but a few. And this is in keeping with her whole concept: to steer clear
of the commercialized industry, bulk sales and impersonal marketing of
lingerie. Her boutique is intimate, with carefully selected designs and
only perhaps two or three sets available of each.

The boutique is in an old fashioned building, on a quiet lane set back
from the malls, cafés and designer shops of West Nanjing Road. I
actually got a bit lost looking for it, but when I found it, it was like
a little hidden gem. On entering the boutique, or should I say boudoir -
yes, the dim and very fabulous lighting and deep purples throughout are
that of a boudoir - I was stunned. The carpets are soft on the feet (you
have to take your shoes off), the high ceiling with its intricate detail
and huge black and crystal chandelier is beautiful and overall there is a
very sexy, sultry atmosphere. The attention to details is apparent and
Shiny has definitely done nothing by halves. A lot of money has been put
into the business and it shows in these details.

Now I don't know about anyone else, but I'm not particularly partial to
changing rooms. You know the curtain ones that you can just about stand
up in, let alone change. And then the ones that only have a mirror
outside, so you have to leave your box, dressed like, well you don't know
until you see...yep not my idea of fun. Now the changing room at Lingerie
& Me is actually a room. Wow, a huge one at that, with a chez-lounge
against the wall, a beautiful dresser and a huge mirror. Shiny wanted to
create a space where people felt comfortable and at home trying things
on, a place where your partner or friend can sit in with you.

Lingerie & Me is not only the only lingerie boutique in Shanghai, it is
in fact on its own in China. She has created a private boutique, where
people can come and feel comfortable trying on and buying underwear. Her
clients are mainly expats and generally over twenty five, possibly
because of the prices. The cheapest thing you can buy sets you back about
680rmb. But those prices come with the label I guess, so if you really
want something that bit more special, something not every man and his dog
are wearing (and I should hope not!) then this is the place to come. The
staff are extremely friendly and speak with you on a very personal level;
they are trained to fit you, measure you and can also advise you on what
would be best for your shape or what you want. In fact you actually need
to know zilch about underwear! Shiny also speaks to her clients about the
designers themselves, so they have a better idea of whose creations they
are wearing.

This gem, I think, is yet to be truly discovered but I do think it is
going to be around for a while. (Once the culture here budges slightly),
this boutique will be buzzing. I only hope it manages to keep its charm
and secrecy, because a gem is always more pretty when it's hidden.

Ducks with exotic flavor

(noblesse.com)
Updated: 2007-07-09 10:13

Duck, which is a rarity in traditional Italian fare, is one of the
signature dishes at Toscana-roasted duck wrapped in pineapple.

Seasoned with Italian vinegar, it pleases the palate with its sour and
spicy flavors. Then there is another fusion dish-pasta seasoned with
Shanghai soy sauce blended with diced spring onion, just like the locals
do. The aroma of spring onion blends perfectly with the flavors of spicy
peppers.

Improve service

Comment on Liu Shinan's column "Hassle over defective cell phone" (China
Daily, August 22)

I agree with Mr Liu's opinion that the mobile companies should improve
their services.

On year after I bought my Philips mobile in late 2005, it could not
receive any signals. I sent it to the Philips repair store, but they
returned it to me a month later, saying I would have to pay 460 yuan if I
wanted my phone repaired.

I am puzzled a well-known brand can produce such products?

Progress toward gays

Comment on Raymond Zhou's column "Principle or prejudice?" (China Daily,
August 18)

There is a Chinese proverb that says Bu pa man; jiu pa zhan. One can
preserve the rhyme by translating it into English as "Don't fear slow
progress; just fear no progress."

Economically, China's progress has been quite rapid. Perhaps there will
be equally rapid progress toward popular acceptance of homosexuality.

Comment on "Chinese abroad to be better protected" (China Daily, August

Recently I have heard much bad news about Chinese being attacked abroad.
People should learn about the customs and crime rate of their destination
countries before visiting.

Related departments also need to provide education and warnings to people
going abroad to prevent tragedies.

Brad Pitt aims to keep focus on Katrina recovery

(Reuters)
Updated: 2007-08-22 08:57

"We've got to push to get these levees taken care of in the correct
fashion," he told reporters at a news conference in the hurricane-ravaged
working class neighborhood.

The house that Pitt toured, loosely modeled on the distinctive New
Orleans "shotgun" style of long, narrow homes, will generate almost all
its electricity from 28 roof-mounted solar panels, said Global Green USA
president Matt Petersen.

Global Green hopes to use the house, which should be completed this fall,
as a prototype for the neighborhood. Built not far from the banks of the
Mississippi River and raised by three feet on concrete pilings, it is
above sea level.

Some in the area, which was not as badly flooded as others in the city,
are rebuilding. But a lack of funds have kept most from starting fresh.

Levee repairs are ongoing and engineers differ over how the new levees
will fare in a major storm.

The environmental group has pledged to create a residential community of
"green" structures, including an 18-unit, low-income apartment building
near the Mississippi.

Pitt, 43, said the redevelopment project could help encourage people
whose homes were destroyed in the storm to return and rebuild in a more
environmentally conscious fashion.

"We knew we couldn't bring back the families and friends that were lost,
bring back the heirlooms, the pictures," Pitt said. "But maybe, in the
process of rebuilding, we could build something smarter, and create a
better way of life for those people who live here."

Mine rescue operation continues as hope fades
By Hu Yinan
Updated: 2007-08-21 07:09

XINTAI, Shandong: Hopes for the survival of 181 miners trapped in two
separate flooded coal mines faded yesterday but the rescue operation
continued.

Pumps were being used to remove water from Huayuan Coal Mine, about 150
km south of the provincial capital Jinan, and Minggong Coal Mine, around
10 km from the Huayuan mine.

But the pumping capacity is about 7,000 cu m an hour while the water in
the flooded mines was an estimated 12 million cu m on Sunday. More pumps
are being rushed to the site.

The water level in the Huayuan mine continued to drop after a
50-meter-long levee breach of the Wenhe River was blocked early on
Sunday. The breach led to the flooding of the two mines.

Meanwhile, four well drilling sets from the Shengli Oilfield in the
province were in place at the mine and one had started drilling. The
drilling of the flooded shaft will help speed up the pumping progress,
said Bu Changsen, a flood prevention expert with the rescue headquarters.

The flooding happened on Friday, first at the Huayuan mine in Xintai, and
later at Minggong mine.

When water gushed in around 2:30 pm, 756 miners were working underground
at the Huayuan mine, and 584 managed to escape.

Ninety-five miners were working at the Minggong mine when the flooding
occurred, and 86 escaped.

Four temporary working groups have been set up to deal with the aftermath
at both mines, including one for compensation and another to deal with
relatives of the trapped miners.

Of the 172 trapped miners at Huayuan Coal Mine, 111 were full-time
employees, and the rest temporary workers.

The energy-thirsty Guangdong Province will purchase more coal from Shanxi Province, the country's biggest coal producer, in the following months. Both Huang Huahua and Yu Youjun, governors of Guangdong and Shanxi provinces, have agreed to expand their coal trade in the near future. Huang said Guangdong, which lacks raw materials and energy resources, needs to expand cooperation with Shanxi and other Chinese regions that have abundant resources to continue its rapid economic development. Yu said his province needs more investors from Guangdong to help develop its rich natural resources. Shanxi would give priority to Guangdong for coal, according to the governor, who was once mayor of Shenzhen in Guangdong Province. Guangdong buys more than 30 million tons of coal annually from Shanxi, accounting for one-fourth of the province's total. One of the country's economic powerhouses, it has become the largest coal consumer on the mainland. Last year alone, Guangdong consumed around 100 million tons of coal, accounting for about 8 percent of the country's total. All its coal is purchased from other provinces. In addition to coal purchases from Shanxi and other Chinese regions, Guangdong also imports coal from abroad. It will buy more than 20 million tons of coal from around the world this year. Coal is mainly used by Guangdong's myriad thermal power plants. Yu is leading a trade delegation from Shanxi Province to attend an investment and trade fair. The fair opened in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong, yesterday. Yu's 1,000-person delegation will bring a total of 2,437 projects seeking Guangdong investors during the fair. Shanxi companies are seeking more investment from Guangdong to help develop its energy, tourism, culture and education industries, and attract more Guangdong talents to work in the inland province. Currently Shanxi has more than 1,500 Guangdong-funded projects while 1,000 Shanxi companies have invested in Guangdong. Their total investment has reached more than 20 billion yuan. Tucked away in Shangdu SOHO, the 100-square-meter restaurant looks more
like an elegant bar or an upmarket bookstore. Its decor includes crystal
curtains, a nicely patterned velvet sofa, and big Chinese wash paintings
on the walls. As one of three owners of the restaurant, the Shanghai
Dreams star is often spotted there dining with friends.

As her first such venture, Gao said she was reluctant to use her fame to
promote the business, so doesn't display any of her pictures or posters
at the restaurant. "But the food here is recommendable, Gao said. "My
most favorite dishes include fern stir-fried smoked pork, sour-spicy rice
noodles, sour fish soup. Featuring authentic Guizhou cuisine, the
restaurant's specialties include pig's trotter hotpot, rice balls fried
with pickled Chinese cabbage, and honey chops. According to Gao, making
pig's trotter hotpot is complicated. First, kidney beans are boiled and
pureed, then some special spice is added and pig's trotters, and boiled
over a slow fire for several hours. The hotpot therefore takes on an
alluring smell and tastes appetizing.

Gao said she loves the taste of rice balls fried with pickled Chinese
cabbage, a special dish for Guizhou locals that is sweet and sticky, but
at the same time sour and spicy. Honey chops is another dish that earns
the restaurant its name. Chops are first pickled with secret sauce, then
steamed and covered with special sauce. Average price: 150-200 yuan for
two.

Lily Allen performs at the Concert for Diana at Wembley Stadium in London, July 1, 2007.[Reuters] ? British pop singer Lily Allen has no idea why her U.S. working visa was revoked, but she hopes she will be granted a new one for her planned September tour, her record company EMI Music said on Wednesday. Allen was detained at Los Angeles International Airport on Sunday for five hours after she arrived from Australia. She was searched, but not strip searched as reported, Murray Chalmers, spokesman for EMI Music in London, said in a statement. "The authorities decided to revoke her American O-1 work visa. She has no idea why she was singled out for such treatment," Chalmers said. "We are sure we have enough time to sort the situation before her next visit in September." A report on the BBC Web site (www.bbc.co.uk) said Allen, 22, had been detained by U.S. authorities in connection with her arrest in June following an incident outside a London nightclub in March. She received a warning from police but was not charged with any crime. "No one knows (why she lost her visa). That was just speculation," Chalmers said of the reports. An O-1 visa allows people with extraordinary skills within the field of sciences, arts, education, business, athletics, or within the field of motion picture or television industry to work temporarily in the United States. Allen's manager, Neale Easterby of Empire Management, told Billboard magazine that the singer was allowed to enter the United States and will remain in the country -- where she is shooting a music video -- until Thursday. On Tuesday Allen, who has a reputation as a wild child in Britain, was nominated for an MTV Video Music Award. She is due to perform at the award show in Las Vegas on September 9 and also plans to tour. Allen, whose song "Smile" was a hit last year, had been due to tour the United States in May and June. Tom Cruise bowled over by Posh's 'really English' talk

(ANI)
Updated: 2007-08-08 14:33

?

Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes, Victoria and David Beckham, Jada Pinkett Smith
and Will Smith
attend the special celebration held at the Museum of Contemporary Art
hosted by
Tom Cruise who threw the bash to welcome the Beckhams to tinsel town.

?

Tom Cruise so loves Victoria Beckham's British accent and turn of phrase,
that he’s now asking her to give him a few lessons.

A source revealed that the actor has started mimicking words that come
out of Posh’s mouth every time she says something ‘really English’.

“Tom thinks her words and phrases are brilliant. Whenever he’s round
there and she says something really English he starts mimicking her,”
the Daily Express quoted the source, as saying.

“She’ll say things like ‘bloody hell’ and ‘blimey’. And
she’ll say ‘come on chaps’ to her sons. Tom loves hearing it all
and is building up a bit of an English vocabulary himself,” the source
added.

The insider also revealed that though Posh was initially very amused by
the way Cruise was enthralled with the way she talks, she’s now getting
used to it since Will Smith is apparently as keen on her accent.

“Victoria is amused by his enthusiasm over her everyday chatter. But
she’s starting to get used to it – because another friend, Will
Smith, also likes taking off her accent and phrases,” the insider said.

Forbes: Damon's a `Bourne' moneymaker

(AP)
Updated: 2007-08-07 08:58

Matt Damon is Hollywood's best investment, says Forbes. com.

For every dollar he was paid for his last three roles, Damon brought in
$29 of gross income, the site calculated.

That put the 36-year-old "Bourne" star atop a Forbes list of 22 film
heavyweights, ranked by the same financial formula.

The first two "Bourne" movies grossed an estimated $850 million at the
box office and in DVD sales, Forbes said. The third installment, "The
Bourne Ultimatum," opened last weekend and raked in $70.2 million at the
box office. It was the biggest August film opening ever.

Brad Pitt took second place on the list, with a gross income return of
$24 for each dollar of his pay, and Vince Vaughn tied with Johnny Depp
for third with $21.

Pitt's ex-wife, Jennifer Aniston, is the most profitable actress with a
gross income return of $17. Pitt's current significant other, Angelina
Jolie, ranked sixth with $15.

"The biggest stars in Hollywood are not the actors that deliver the
biggest returns," Forbes senior editor Michael Ozanian said in a
statement Monday.

Russell Crowe is at the bottom of the list. His last three films — "A
Good Year," "Cinderella Man" and "Master and Commander" — averaged just
$5 in gross income for every dollar spent on the Oscar winner, Forbes
said.

Movies starring the two Toms — Hanks and Cruise — averaged $12 and
$11 of gross income, respectively. Will Smith and Denzel Washington each
brought in $10.

On the comedic front, Adam Sandler brought in $9 per dollar earned, Will
Ferrell and Jim Carrey $8 each).

Forbes.com calculated the net revenue for a film by adding the worldwide
box office and revenues from U.S. DVD and video rentals and then
subtracting its budget. The net revenue was divided by the actor's total
compensation to derive gross income. The average gross income of an
actor's last three films produced their box-office return.

The "Ultimate Star Payback" list was posted Monday.

Usher weds Foster in Atlanta

(WENN)
Updated: 2007-08-06 10:06

R&B heartthrob Usher wed his pregnant fiancee Tameka Foster in his native
Atlanta on Friday, according to reports.

People magazine reports 28-year-old Usher, real name Usher Raymond,
married stylist Foster, 37, at the office of the singer's lawyer in
Atlanta.

The Chicago Sun-Times claims Usher's mother, Jonetta Patton, was among
the guests. Recent reports have suggested Patton was fired as Usher's
manager earlier this year when she disagreed with his engagement to
Foster.

The Friday nuptials follows last weekend's last-minute cancellation of a
star-studded wedding at music mogul Antonio 'L.A.' Reid's Sagaponack, New
York, home.

Sources claimed the couple cancelled their New York wedding last month
after an argument over the meal at the reception, but Foster said a brief
hospitalization caused the postponement.

The couple started dating in November 2005, the same year Foster split
from her ex-husband Ryan Glover--father of her three children.

Usher and Foster's baby is due this winter.

Pop star Prince kicks off rare set of London shows

(AFP)
Updated: 2007-08-02 19:15

LONDON - American popstar Prince kicked off his 21-show London tour at
the capital's O2 Arena Wednesday night with a medley of his best known
songs -- and gave away copies of his latest album to his fans.

The diminutive musician from Minneapolis, who opened the concert with
"Purple Rain", has claimed that the tour -- his only European visit of
the year -- will be the final time he will play his greatest hits live.

In a two-and-a-half hour set that marked his first performance in London
in more than a decade, he also sang "Kiss", "Girls and Boys", "Let's Go
Crazy" and "Nothing Compared 2 U", accompanied by two scantily-clad
female dancers.

The 49-year-old has said that, having prepared 150 songs for the 21
shows, audiences will hear a different selection every night he performs.

Audiences finally began heading for the exits after Prince's third encore
Wednesday evening, only to rush to return when he appeared in the middle
of the auditorium, and made his way back to the stage.

When he was back on stage, concert-goers were treated to a solo acoustic
version of "Little Red Corvette". Prince also covered "Come Together" by
the Beatles, and "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley.

All the people who attended the concert received a copy of the artist's
new album, "Planet Earth". The pop maverick gave away about three million
copies of the album with British newspaper the Mail on Sunday last month,
amid protests from music retailers.

Through his career, Prince has sold 80 million albums, and won six
Grammys and an Oscar, which he received for the music to the 1984 film
"Purple Rain".

Angelina Jolie and Fran Drescher team up to fight cancer

Angelina Jolie and Fran Drescher team up to fight cancer

(AccessHollywood)
Updated: 2007-07-31 16:25

Angelina Jolie and Fran Drescher might be an unlikely combination, but
they are certainly a lifesaving one, as the duo has teamed up to fight
cancer.

Angelina, who lost her mother to ovarian cancer, has joined forces with
Fran, a uterine cancer survivor, to do some work with Fran's Cancer
Schmancer– a charity devoted to women's health.

"Her mother had ovarian cancer and did not win her battle, so she is
going to lock elbows with me and we are going to do some things together.
We will do a PSA and maybe go to Washington," Fran said. "We are
dedicated to ensure that all women's cancers get diagnosed in Stage 1 by
galvanizing and educating, then we can change policy by signing
petitions."

Thankfully, TV's former "Nanny" has been cancer-free since she beat it
seven years ago at age 42.

"I was just so upset because the cure for cancer was a radical
hysterectomy and that's a difficult operation for any woman, but for one
who never had any children, like myself, that's a bitter pill to
swallow," Fran added. "By the end of the first year, I was back to myself
– a new version of myself. And in many ways, a better version because I
became a person that has purpose."

Fran says a positive attitude is the key to survival, and during her
battle she developed a way to keep negative thoughts out of her mind.

"Don't mix imagination with fear – it's a deadly cocktail. Wear a
rubber band and every time you start to connect the dots that aren't
necessarily there, snap that wrist band and say, 'Don't mix imagination
with fear,'" she added.

Former 'Enders actor Mike Reid dies, aged 67

(Digital Spy)
Updated: 2007-07-30 16:21

Ex-EastEnders actor Mike Reid has died at the age of 67.

According to his agent, David Hahn, Mike - who played Frank Butcher in
the BBC soap for just under two decades - suffered a suspected heart
attack at his Spanish home.

Hahn told BBC News: "Mike was in fine fettle form. In fact only a couple
of weeks ago we were having dinner over here.

"Mike, that particular day, went to see his consultant and had a full
medical - and they gave him a clean bill of health."

He added: "He would see the funny side of any situation, no matter how
black it was. Even now I'm sure he's laughing."

Describing it as "absolutely devastating", close friend and fellow
comedian Frank Carson said: "We have just lost our friend Bernard Manning
a fortnight ago. I just can't realise... this is devastating news."

He added: "This is horrendous news. Everyone in showbusiness will be
shocked because this was one of the great friends of anything you wanted
to do in showbusiness."

Controller of BBC Drama John Yorke said: "Mike's genius was to capture
the heart of that flawed dreamer and make generations of viewers love
him," he said.

"Albert Square - and British television - will be a far poorer place
without him, as will the lives of those who loved and worked with him
throughout his extraordinary career."

Former Walford co-star Pam St Clement (Pat Evans) added: "It has come as
a terrible shock - somebody larger than life as Mike was in person and
character - he seemed indestructible."

French film star Jean-Paul Belmondo may soon make his comeback

(AFP)
Updated: 2007-07-29 16:52

PARIS - France's legendary film star Jean-Paul Belmondo may return to the
silver screen at the ripe age of 74, emerging after some six years of
recovery from a stroke.

Belmondo's return would be directed by Francis Huster who wants to
produce a new version of the film "Umberto D.", the 1951 master work of
Italian director Vittorio de Sica, Le Parisien newspaper said, citing
Ici-Paris magazine.

When contacted by AFP, the actor's wife, Natty Belmondo, confirmed the
project and the actor's "joy" about doing a new version, but added that
"nothing has been signed yet."

The film "Umberto D.", which would have the French title "A man and his
dog," tells the story of a retired teacher who lives in misery with a dog
as his only companion.

According to sources close to the production, the film's insurers have
not yet given their approval.

Belmondo's last film was "Amazones" with Arielle Dombasle in July 2001.

In August that year, Belmondo suffered a serious stroke while on vacation
in Corsica which left him partially paralyzed. Since then the actor has
undergone intensive therapy and has made consistent progress.

In December 2002, he married Natty, his companion of 13 years, and in
August 2003, he became a father for the fourth time with the birth of his
daughter Stella.

Turncoat Michael is making a "Lost" `comeback. Harold Perrineau, who
plays the character last seen betraying his fellow crash survivors to
save himself and his son, will return to the show next season.

ABC Entertainment President Stephen McPherson didn't offer any details
Wednesday of what's in store for Michael. He also didn't say whether
Walt, the son played by Malcolm David Kelley, will be seen again.

The pair fled the mysterious island where the crash victims were
struggling to survive against the dangerous "Others," with desperate
Michael turning over his friends in exchange for escape.

The network had planned to make the "Lost" announcement at Comic-Con
International, the comic book and pop-culture show starting Thursday in
San Diego. But McPherson, speaking to a meeting of the Television Critics
Association, was pressed for the information.

McPherson initially balked at talking, instead joking about what the
announcement might be.

"I've cast Don Imus on `Lost,'" McPherson quipped.

Earlier this year, ABC said will run for three more seasons, concluding
in 2009-10. The series will return for its fourth season in January.

Anthony and Lopez mull collaborative tour

Updated: 2007-07-23 11:22

Actress, presenter Jennifer Lopez and her husband singer Marc Anthony
arrive at the 79th Annual Academy Awards in Hollywood, California,
February 25, 2007 file photo.[Reuters]

They've acted in films together and collaborated on each other's albums,
and now husband-and-wife team Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez are mulling
a combined tour.

"Jennifer has never toured," Anthony told Billboard. "I've toured all my
life. This is where I can step in and say, 'Oh, my God, this could be
fun,' and introduce her to that world."

He added, "It is something she's always wanted to do, but she's never had
the time. And I was offered many more films I never took advantage of
because I was always on tour. So, yes, we're seriously talking about
going out this year (and) putting together an amazing show with just her
and myself."

Asked how he balances his own projects with those on which he and Lopez
collaborate, Anthony said that "a big part of mine and Jennifer's
connection is the understanding that we have a passion for what we do.
So, it's just a natural progression to be involved. Me, I cannot sit down
and have a conversation about image. That's her strong suit. She picks me
up where I'm weak and I elevate her where she's weak. That's where the
true partnership comes in."

Anthony is about to hit the big screen in "El Cantante," a biopic of
salsa legend Hector Lavoe. Lopez stars in the film as Lavoe's wife,
Nilda. The film's soundtrack, to be released July 24, is Anthony's ninth
studio album and the first from his new venture with Sony BMG.

"I settled on celebrating (Lavoe's) approach to music," Anthony said of
the soundtrack. "I was going to try to learn his phrasing, and try to
stay true to what he offered as a singer. That was No. 1. Once I made
that decision, I realized that I was in deep s--t, because the hardest
part of this whole project was the music -- singing like him,
understanding his phrasing. That's when I realized his true genius.
That's why they called him 'el Cantante de los Cantantes' (Singer of
Singers)."

Anthony said his dedication to salsa will not push future projects to the
back burner. "I'm really inspired to do another Spanish ballad album,
because (2004's) 'Amar Sin Mentiras' was really groundbreaking for me
personally," he said. "It's another way for me to express myself. I think
I'll be ready in a couple of months to press the button on a Spanish pop
album. As far as (an) English (album) is concerned, I'm not that enthused
right now, although I have a couple of tracks I'm into."

Measures urged to boost pig farming

Measures urged to boost pig farming

(Xinhua)
Updated: 2007-07-28 21:05

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has called for measures to boost pig farming
as short supply has led to continued pork price hikes, causing concerns
among consumers and the government over a possible spillover effect on
inflation.

A woman customer buys pork at a market in Yichang, central China's Hubei
Province in this June 5, 2007 photo. The consumer price index rose 3.4%
in May over the same period of last year, according to statistics
released on Tuesday by the National Bureau of Statistics. [newsphoto]

Wen urged local governments to leave no stone unturned in enhancing the
enthusiasm of pig breeders when addressing an executive conference of the
State Council on Wednesday.

The country's pig production fell dramatically in recent months on pig
breeders' dampened enthusiasm due to rising feedstuff costs and low price
in past few years, and also the massive pig culling after the outbreak of
blue-ear disease in some regions.

The short supply of live pigs kept driving the pork price higher. The
wholesale price of pork in June represented a 74.6-percent surge from the
same month last year.

Wen said it's of great importance to increase pig production, which would
help stabilize the pork price and satisfy the meat demand of the public.

He called on local governments to deliver the subsidies for breeding
female pigs to farmers arranged by the central budget "as soon as
possible".

In order to beef up disease control, Wen said immunization against major
pig epidemics shall be provided to farmers free of charges, and that
subsidies shall be offered to farmers if their pigs have to be
slaughtered for disease control.

The premier said local administrative chiefs shall be held responsible
for pork supply in their areas, and that all unreasonable restrictions on
pig farming shall be abolished.

Local governments shall also increase or pay allowances for lower-income
families and college students to ensure their living standards are not
adversely affected by the higher pork prices, Wen said.

Jim Rogers cautiously bullish on China stocks

Jim Rogers cautiously bullish on China stocks

(Reuters)
Updated: 2007-07-27 08:44

Investors monitor stock price movements at a brokerage in Changchun,
Northeast China's Jilin Province July 26, 2007. [newsphoto]

SHANGHAI - China's stock market is dangerously high but environmental
protection, water, railways and renewable energy stocks are still worth
holding, fund manager and investment author Jim Rogers said on Thursday.

Rogers, in a presentation at a conference, also reiterated his view to
dump dollars and bonds and stay bullish on commodities, such as oil and
aluminum. Gold was still going strong, but copper prices look stretched,
he added.

A prominent China bull, Rogers said investors should be cautious after
China's benchmark Shanghai composite index quadrupled over the past two
years.

It closed at a record high on Thursday.

"The stock market is going through the roof over the past three years.
That's always a dangerous sign," said Rogers, who co-founded the Quantum
hedge fund with billionaire investor George Soros in the 1970s.

"And if you are new to the stock market, you probably think this is the
way that things always work. This is not the way the market always
works," he said.

"I'm not suggesting you sell your stocks. But I want you to know this is
not usual," he said, adding that some Chinese shares were going to
collapse as they were "crazily priced."

But Rogers sees opportunities in Chinese companies involved in sectors
such as environmental protection, water, green energy, railways and
education, where the government and public were expected to spend a lot
of money.

"I'm not selling my Chinese shares. As I said, I bought more of them last
week. If the market triples again in the next year I would probably have
to sell my Chinese shares," said Rogers, who bought his first Chinese
stocks in 1999.

Rogers, 64, urged investors to get exposure to the Chinese currency, the
renminbi , and dump the U.S. dollar, which he calls "a terribly flawed
currency" as the United States is deep in debt.

"Renminbi is going to be one of the strongest currencies for many years
to come," he said.

Bonds around the world are headed down and that trend would also continue
for many years to come, he said.

"If you invest in bonds anywhere in the world, sell it," he said. "If you
invest in shares, think of Asia," he added.

Commodities such as oil and metals are expected to stay strong for many
years, driven by supply and demand, Rogers said.

He said he favored aluminum over copper right now because copper prices
had shot up, and said property in China is getting expensive.

"I will not buy in Shanghai or Beijing at the moment."

Pet faithful after master's death

(China Daily)
Updated: 2007-07-26 09:22

A dog in Dalian, Liaoning, was faithful even after death to its master,
jumping into a river near the tomb and committing suicide.

The dog was the man's loyal companion for 18 years. The man, surnamed
Bai, died at the age of 77. After Bai's death, the dog refused to eat,
staying in the old man's room.

Seeing its sorrow, one of the man's daughters took the dog to visit her
father's tomb one day last week. After walking around its master's tomb
several times, the dog jumped into a river, vanishing, and presumed dead.

An insight into gay life in China

CHINA / National

An insight into gay life in China

By Erin Zureick (chinadaily.com.cn)
Updated: 2007-07-24 15:46

A lot can change in six years.

At least that's the experience of Didier Zheng, an openly gay Chinese man
who just wrapped up a stint hosting China's first Internet television
show devoted to addressing homosexual issues.

Didier Zheng, A French teacher and AIDS activist, hosts a live weekly
show on the Internet about issues ranging from AIDS prevention to why
some people are gay. [chinadaily.com.cn]
Educated at the Sorbonne University in Paris, Zheng said he found a new
climate in China after returning in 2006 from his six years abroad.
That's because in 2001 the Chinese government took homosexuality off its
list of mental illnesses; and Shanghai's Fudan University introduced its
first undergraduate course on homosexuality in 2005.

And then there's Zheng's live weekly show, which made its Internet debut
in April. Called "Tongxing Xianglian," or "Connecting Homosexuals," the
show's purpose was to educate gay and heterosexual communities about
issues ranging from AIDS prevention to why some people are gay.

Speaking to chinadaily.com.cn in French-accented English, Zheng is
talkative and eager to talk about gay issues. The 27-year-old has a slim
build and engaging personality.

"After 2001, everything changed," Zheng said. "Society is changing. We
are paying more attention to gay man's socialization and integration
[into society]."

A French teacher and AIDS activist at Chi Heng Foundation, Zheng believes
that China's economic development, coupled with an influx of foreign
ideas from across the globe, has helped China make progress in its
treatment of gays.

The show's guests were chosen to represent different aspects of gay life.
For example, some were celebrities such as singers and actors, while
others included doctors and ordinary Chinese. Zheng also conducted
interviews at a gay bar called Destination in Beijing's Sanlitun
nightclub area.

"I just want to give more information, especially to non-gay people," he
explained. "They know very little about gay life."

But despite the warming climate in China for gays, the show also
indicates how much more progress the country needs to make.

Zheng thinks the Internet format of the show worked well because content
is archived online at www.phoenixtv.com and viewers can watch it at their
convenience. But he also acknowledged that the authorities monitored the
show's content carefully, though he declined to cite specific examples of
changes.

So far, 16 million people have logged on to watch the talk show, which
had 12 episodes.

"There are many people in China's gay community, but people don't have a
deep enough understanding about this community," the show's producer Gang
Gang said before the debut. "This community faces a lot of trouble and
difficulties."

Zheng said his family, especially his brother, have been very supportive
of his decisions. But many of his friends have not been as fortunate -
which partly motivated him to host the show.

"Discrimination is very common in a society," Zheng explained, adding
that he thinks that younger generations are slowly changing this behavior
and that this is an international norm.

The show aired through the year's second three-month programming season.
Zheng said he is unsure if he will be asked to do something similar for
another season.

Zheng hopes in the near future to produce some special reports and
conduct more interviews. His goal is to speak with high-level
international officials such as the mayor of Paris to ask them about the
government's role in legislating rules related to homosexuals. He said
these interviews could serve as possible models for Chinese behavior.

"I just want to speak out about gay life in China."

China mulls deposit insurance system

By Dong Zhixin (chinadaily.com.cn)
Updated: 2007-07-23 11:02

China's central bank is considering establishing a deposit insurance
system in a bid to promote financial stability, news reports said on
Monday.

The People's Bank of China (PBoC) aims to push forward legislation on
deposit insurance, the Xinhua News Agency reported, citing information
from a central bank meeting.

PBoC has carried out research looking into this matter, according to the
report.

Deposit insurance is a measure introduced by policy makers to protect
deposits, in full or in part, in the event of banks being unable to pay
deposits. The insurance can maintain public confidence in the financial
system and prevent bank runs, thus helping promote financial stability.

The United States was the first country to establish an official deposit
insurance scheme, during the Great Depression in 1934. Currently, nearly
100 countries have such an arrangement in place.

The lack of deposit insurance in China is related to the fact that most
of the banks in the country are State-owned, which offer confidence to
depositors, analysts said.
